| My name is..
Holan.
How do you pronounce Holan? A question I, in fact, ask
myself. Traveling all over, transferring to six different schools for
my primary school, and meeting new people through my occupations and
church, has allowed me to introduce myself differently from time to
time.
Those that know me longer recognize this but sometimes get confused.
So here we go. (the answer is towards the bottom)
My name is Holan. [Pyrrhic or Trochee] Like the country Holland with no "D." -or- Like Collin with an "H" instead of a "C."
When
a person really wants to know the "correct" pronunciation of my name
and is not content with my answer that it doesn't really matter. The
person would ask, "What do your parents call you?"
The thing is each of them call me something different and the pronunciations above is what my father calls me. I've been told that it sounds nicer. So recntly for 2006 and 2007, my name is Holan like Holland.
My name is Holan. [Pyrrhic or Trochee] Like Nolan with an "H" instead of an "N" Like "Hole in" in a "Hole-in-one."
I
might have introduce myself in UOP as Holan (like Nolan). I may not
have. It's been a while. Some of my childhood friends as well as my own
brother call me by this. My mother called me this as well. Seeing thats its getting unbalanced of people not calling me this, I may start introducing myself as this again.
Holan... Like Mulan with an "H" instead of an "M" [Trochee] For Reals? My grandmother on my mother's side calls me this.
Holan... Like Land Ho but instead it's Ho Land. [Trochee] Um
yeah... My roommate from San Diego used to pronounce it like this
stressing the "Lan." He tried. You gotta love him for that. I would say
maybe this is how you really pronounce it after all, "Don't Caucasians
understand the English language better than me?" LoL
Holan... Like O-Lan from the Good Earth. [Pyrrhic or Iamb] Um...
When the Good Earth was required reading my freshman year of
highschool. i was embarrased that O-Lan was a girl. Anyways, My aunts
and uncles on my mothers side pronounce this way. _______________________________________________________________
Sometimes,
people decide to call me by a different name or give a new one to me.
(It's the little things in life that make life special)
One girl
called me Hall. This bugged the heck out of me. Maybe since it sounds
like the cough drop Halls or reminds me of Bug Hall. I dunno but it was
interesting all right.
The letter H. I thought this was cool
cause you cant spell out the letter H but can you? Being Filipino, you
know a lot of AJs, Jays, JJ, JRs (not Jr.'s"), DJ, SJs. Well you get
the picture but only a handful of people has simplified it to this.
Holls.
Like Rolls but with an H. Doesn't that make it like Holes. Either way,
it kinda bothers me. One girl calls me this for fun I guess? I'm
tolerant.
A lot of Filipinos have nicknames (sometimes that
has nothing to do with their name). I have a cousin Geralyn called
Tracy. My brother's childhood nickname is CJ but his name is Casey. My
Uncles name is Honesto But is simplified to Oning. My Grandfather's
name is Anastacio simplified to Ashung. Yup a lot of Filipino have nicknames... Not Me. :) _______________________________________________________________
My other names. They serve a purpose and have been used on occasion. Holan Charles Hiroshi Cadelina Cadiz Nakata. Cadelina is my Mothers Maiden Name passed on (Some cultures do that. When i was little I thought ALL cultures did that)
Charles. Sometimes
I got a substitute teacher that came from the east cost (I assume.
Either that or they are "super white" Forgive me for my politically
incorrectness but i dont know how else to explain it). They would skip
my First name while doing roll (maybe they thought it was a typo or
some foreign Asian name and a lot of people use Englsih names in that
case) and call for Charles. While the whole class looks around in
confusion. I'd raise my hand so I wouldn't be marked absent.
The Asian way... 中田浩 (なかた ひろし)
Anata no namae wa nan desu ka? Nakata Horen desu -or- Nakata Hiroshi desu
Side Note: Nihongo ga Wakarimasen
I had a teacher from Japan that would pronounce my name as Horen which is strange cause Horenso is Spinach in Japanese. My relatives from Japan struggled with the name Holan and asked for my Japanese name instead, named after my Granfather. Lesson: If your Japanese, give your kid a Japanese name (If you want him to be cool, LoL)
Ni Jiao Shenma Mingzi? Wo Jiao Zhong Tian Hao.
Side Note: Zhongwen wo bu dong.
Derived
from the Kanji of my Japanese name (Nakata Hiroshi) comes my Chinese
name used in Chinese class. I was the only non-Chinese in my class.
They ran out of space in Japanese class. Oh wells, China is number 1
language in the world.
There you have it folks. Answer? Oh yeah... Scroll down to find out!
************************************************************** The answer is... Holan... Ha as in "Ha Ha" and Lan as in "Lani" I
Do Not prefer this. In fact only one of my aunts, her husband and their
daughter call me this. Oh and also a childhood friend. But technically
this is the correct pronunciation. Since my name derives from both my parents names. My father being Howard and my mother being Lani.
************************************************************** _______________________________________________________________ Technical Details...
Holan like Holland [hol-in] O pronounced as in Ollie | I as in Sin Variations for O Ho [hawl] O pronounced as A in Hall | Variations for A in lan [uhn] As the E in Problem (British accent) | [en] As in E in Ever. (I got tired to do the technical stuff of the rest)
